A repeatable espresso preparation routine

Change one thing at a time. A simple sequence makes it easier to tell whether a change in grind, dose or preparation improved your coffee.

1. Weigh the dose

Use the basket maker’s recommended dose as your starting point. Weigh the coffee rather than relying on how full the basket looks. Keep dose consistent while adjusting the grinder.

2. Contain the grounds

A dosing funnel helps keep grounds in the basket during grinding and distribution. Choose the funnel for your basket size, then remove it before tamping.

3. Distribute gently

Use a WDT tool with gentle movements through the coffee bed to break up clumps. Work toward the surface without throwing grounds out. Tap once to settle the coffee if needed.

4. Tamp level

Use a tamper sized for your basket. Keep the basket supported and tamp level. Keep the same preparation routine as you dial in your recipe.

5. Record yield and time

Use a scale and timer to record your recipe. Start from the coffee roaster’s recommendation and adjust to taste. If you change the grind, keep the dose and target yield steady so you can compare the result.

6. Clean up

Empty the puck, rinse the basket and wipe the work area. Follow your machine’s instructions for group-head cleaning. Unplug the grinder before using a brush around its chute or burr area.
