Espresso accessory sizing for machine-fit tampers

51 mm vs 54 mm vs 58 mm espresso accessories: a practical sizing guide

Espresso accessories are often sold as 51 mm, 54 mm or 58 mm. Those labels are useful, but they are only the beginning of a good fit.

The important part is the basket and portafilter geometry on your exact machine. Two machines can be described with the same nominal size while still preferring slightly different accessory dimensions.

The three size families in the ShotSpec range

51 mm is the family used by the De’Longhi accessories in our range. 54 mm is the family used for compatible Breville/Sage home espresso machines, while the ShotSpec tamper for this family is specified at 53 mm to suit the basket fit. 58 mm is the common full-size family used by many E61 and compatible espresso setups.

That is why we organise the store by machine family rather than asking you to choose from a wall of almost-identical dimensions.

Why a nominal size does not guarantee fit

A tamper needs enough clearance to enter the basket smoothly, but not so much that it leaves a wide ring of untamped coffee around the edge. A dosing funnel has a different job: it needs to sit securely on the basket rim and, for a magnetic funnel, the basket also needs a suitable magnetic surface.

Machine generation, replacement baskets and aftermarket portafilters can all change the answer. If you have changed the original basket or portafilter, check the actual part rather than relying only on the machine name.

A simple way to choose

  1. Identify your exact espresso-machine model.
  2. Check whether you still use the original basket and portafilter.
  3. Start with the relevant ShotSpec machine family.
  4. Read the variant label and fit notes before ordering.
  5. If anything is unclear, send us the machine and basket details before checkout.

Our espresso accessory size guide puts the current ShotSpec fit information in one place.

What should be machine-specific?

The accessories where fit matters most in our current range are the adjustable espresso tamper and magnetic dosing funnel. Tools such as the WDT tool, scale, knock box and milk pitcher are much less dependent on basket diameter.

If you are building a setup from scratch, choose the machine-fit items first, then add the universal tools around them.
